It's an unassuming grey building on a stretch of road west of the Loop. There's no indication of what thrills await inside. But the fact that chef Grant Achatz's Alinea was named America's number one restaurant by Gourmet barely a year after it opened should tell you just how deceiving looks can be.
Inside you are presented with two options: the 12-course tasting menu or the 24-course tour. Each course may consist of only a bit or two, but that doesn't mean they're simple by any means. Achatz is known for his "molecular gastronomy," taking advantage of cutting edge technology to create miniature masterpieces whose flavors belie their dainty size. Be ready to be wowed — and to stay for awhile, as the tour can take up to five hours. (But they'll be some of the best hours of your tastebuds' life.)
