Nothing brushes-off the impending winter doldrums like a visit to the American Museum of Natural History's spectacular Butterfly Conservatory. Now in its ninth year, October 7th marked the beginning of the institution's annual seven-month dance with our delicate, tropical friends. It's a rare chance to be at one with nature in this metropolis of ours (the butterflies are actually set free in some spaces) — plus think of all the cocktail-party fodder you'll walk away with (Greek roots of the word butterfly, anyone?). It's a well-spent afternoon for families, couples and singles alike. Catch it now before it flits away May 28.

I took my daughter to this last year and she stood 5 feet from the entrance in amazement. Her room is now decorated in butterflies. I know we'll be going to this exhibit for years to come.
