NYC: Cinematic City

New YorkNew York Cardmember Pick

Seasoned screenwriter Akiko Turner has an eye for all things cinematic. So when we asked her to round up her favorite quintessentially Manhattan haunts, she did it in a New York minute.

"When I need a little inspiration, I go uptown to The Mall in Central Park. Those trees! Nothing frames a moment like those trees. Usually there's someone playing a horn, or rollerblading through as high as a kite. Perfect. Get a pretzel and just sit.

"I also fancy a little, barely-known Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side called Corinna. Three generations work there; the grandkids play host and hostess, the parents work the kitchen, and the grandmother sits in her little black dress, hands folded and making sure no one gets out of line.

"But, really, the ultimate New York experience isn't in Manhattan at all. There's no better place to wildly admire the city than from The River Café. Tucked below the Brooklyn Bridge, this floating barge of a restaurant isn't just about the pricey food — which is quite good, actually. It's about rediscovering why it is that you moved to this pricey, hectic, dirty city, anyway. From here you're a stone's throw away from the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Grab a cone and hang out on the pier, watching all the weddings drive in for their pictures, or walk south to Brooklyn Heights and stroll along the promenade. I dare you to find something more New York than that."
