Just a few years ago, the area to the south of Cobble Hill and to the west of Carroll Gardens was considered Red Hook, and the waterfront over there was, well, a mess. Now, due to development and the real estate market's overwhelming need to brand areas, this neck of the woods is called the Columbia Waterfront District, and the waterfront... well, it's still kind of a mess. But while it gets a makeover, locals are converting shops on those little-traveled cobblestone streets into tony boutiques and delicious restaurants. Case in point, Alma, a traditional, sleek Mexican joint with all the spiciness you'd expect. Hit it now while their outdoor deck is open and sip a margarita while overlooking the skyline. Recommended: ceviche pescado, $9.25.
