annamaria.jpgFans of the Italian delicacy that is tiramisu are often disappointed: their favorite dessert is too often a soggy, mushy mess. Not so at Anna Maria Pasteria. The Buena Park restaurant boasts the best in the city — light at fluffy, rich and decadent, it's the perfect end to a meal that starts with a nice bruschetta and moves on to once of more than a dozen pasta choices or heartier dishes like veal parmigiana and chicken vesuvio.

CHI: Best of Neighborhood Gems

ChicagoChicago Hidden GemPicksPicks Chicago

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, so of course there are special spots in each one. We can't cover all 77 official hoods, so here are just a couple from our favorites.
• Simon's up in Andersonville (5210 N. Clark) is still a couple months away from pouring its first glogg of the season, but stop in anyhow.
The Village Tap in Roscoe Village boasts a great beer selection, an eclectic menu and one of the coziest beer gardens in the city.
The Handlebar has quickly become a mainstay for the Wicker Park/Bucktown biking set.
Cleo's loves its Ukrainian Village patrons so much it serves an all-you-can-eat free buffet late on Saturday nights.
• Once all the tourists are gone, the Billy Goat Tavern is just a friendly neighborhood bar for the North Bridge area. You can even still bend the ear of a newspaper man from time to time.

CHI: Wine by the Fire

ChicagoChicago Hidden Gem

404wine.jpgIt's hard to find a cozier wine bar than 404. Tucked into the second room at Jack's in West Lincoln Park, 404 centers on a toasty fireplace, with banquettes, oversized easy chairs and small tables at which to snuggle up to the wine list. Choose from 35 wines by the glass or more than 90 by the bottle, and a little snack to nosh on (the cheese flights are excellent, as is the barbecue chicken pizza). Perfect for a fall date.

CHI: Deep and Rich

ChicagoChicago New and Notable

sepia.jpgThe color sepia is a deep, rich brown, evocative of treasured photos and olden days. The décor at new West Loop restaurant Sepia features a lot of the color, unsurprisingly, and is elegant and nostalgic in just the same way. On the menu you'll find contemporary-yet-traditional American dishes, such as grilled quail with mustard greens and warm pig trotters vinaigrette, grilled flatiron steak with duck fat potatoes, and bacon-bleu cheese-peach flatbread, to be paired with something from the 100-bottle boutique wine list. Never has a hot young restaurant seemed so classic.

lebouchon.jpgLe Bouchon has many admirers — so many that it can be as hard to get a table for its Tuesday prix fixe dinner special as it is on a Friday or Saturday night. Partly it's because the room is rather small, but mostly it's because of gracious service and French comfort cooking — French onion soup, snails Burgundy, steak frite and delicious crispy duck. Don't forget to save room for the decadent, chocolate-drenched profiteroles.

The Metro turned 25 this year, and it's still going strong as the city's premier rock club.

dine.jpgDine, the restaurant in the Crown Plaza hotel in Greektown, has a most unfortunate view of a parking lot out its floor-to-ceiling windows. On the other hand, there's free parking in that lot, which means you won't be hunting for a spot for half an hour before giving up and valeting! You'll find black angus meatloaf, buttermilk fried chicken and even liver and onions on its slightly upscaled comfort food menu — along with a martini list and one of the better red velvet cakes to be found this far north.

CHI: No, It's Not a Mistake

ChicagoChicago New and Notable

The requisite joke with Andersonville's Il Fiasco is that the name seems to doom it from the start. In actuality, it's Italian for the straw-wrapped style of wine bottle typically associated with Chianti. And the menu is far from a disaster. Instead, it's full of hearty Tuscan fare, with plenty of pasta and pizzas to go around. Start off with fried baby artichokes and move on the jalapeno gnocchi, made zesty but not scorching by the addition of the peppers. The restaurant can get a bit noisy on the weekends, but isn't that a sign of a properly popular Italian restaurant?

In a city with such a vibrant arts scene, it's hard to pick out just a handful as the best. But here's a try:
• The Art Institute of Chicago, the CSO and the Poetry Foundation have teamed up to offer a yearlong series entitled American Perspectives, encompassing image, music and words. Opening day is this Saturday, Sept. 15.
Redmoon Theatre is reliably entertaining and thought-provoking. Its current production examines the world of haute couture and "the virtues and vices of being naughty and nice."
The Joffrey Ballet's upcoming performance of Giselle promises to be outstanding.
• Steppenwolf returns to the classics with The Crucible, opening this Thursday, Sept. 13.

CHI: Monsters of Burger

ChicagoChicago Indulgence

kumascorner.jpgThe best hamburgers in the city belong to a place called Kuma's Corner You'd never expect to find such gourmet toppings on burgers named after heavy metal bands, served from an open kitchen in the back of a bar, but wait till you wrap your hands around the Judas Priest, a half-pound hamburger topped with bacon, bleu cheese dressing and apples, walnuts and cranberries, or the Mastodon, with bacon, cheddar, barbecue sauce and a mound of frizzled onions. • The Bongo Room's Wicker Park and South Loop locations both pack a mean French toast.

But the MCA does its best to break down those barriers and get people talking to each other with programs like Tuesdays on the Terrace, weekly summer parties that take full advantage of the museum's gorgeous downtown setting. There you'll listen to live jazz (this week it's Corey Wilkes Trio, serving as an excellent prelude to the Jazz Festival later in the week) while enjoying cocktails and dinner from Puck's Cafe.
